Road station

Flego[.]na

Flegoana is the usual reading of a damaged name: a small hole in the parchment has removed one letter, and older copies fill the gap in different ways. The station is equated with Elegosine, where, according to the Roman writer Pliny, the Tigris rises from a conspicuous spring in a plain of Greater Armenia. Ancient geographers believed the Tigris flowed through Lake Van, vanished underground and emerged again beyond the mountains, so a strong spring here, in the valley of the Bendimahi, could pass for its true source.
