Fl. Marta

Marta (Barrington)

The river Marta, drawn on the map but left without a name, is the outflow of Lake Bolsena, a short, winding river that runs through the old territory of Tarquinii to the sea. The map, which does not show the lake at all, makes it spring from a group of hills instead. Where the roads to Tuscana and along the coast cross it, the map writes Marta twice, perhaps for a bridge or a station at the crossing, or perhaps as the remains of the river's own name, squeezed in for lack of space. A distance figure is missing here.
