Fl. Matrinus/Macrinus

Piomba

The Matrinus, today the Piomba in the Abruzzo, is drawn on the map without a name, beside the coastal station of Macrinum. The Greek geographer Strabo says it flows past the town of Hadria, today Atri, and that Hadria's harbour at its mouth was named after it. The map and the list of places compiled in Ravenna write the station as Macrinum, with a c where the Greek writers have a t, so it is not certain which form is right. The little river runs close to the larger Vomanus, and together with the sea they enclose a nearly triangular stretch of hill country.
