Listen to the story
Fletione is Fectio, the Roman fort at Vechten near Bunnik in the Netherlands, on the Kromme Rijn. Founded early in the first century as a supply base for Rome's campaigns into Germany, it was burned in the Batavian revolt, rebuilt under Vespasian and later served the Rhine fleet, with quays and the remains of ships. Tungrian citizens and the boatmen living at Fectio set up an altar here to their goddess Viradecdis. As the river arm silted up, the fort lost its purpose, and it was abandoned around 275.
