Fl. Naro
Neretva
The Naro, today's Neretva, is drawn on the map without a name, and its course is turned through a right angle. The river breaks through the karst mountains in a deep gorge and ends in a marshy delta on the Adriatic; above Narona it once widened into a lake, and ships could sail up past the town. The Greek historian Theopompus thought the Aegean and the Adriatic were joined underground, because pottery from Chios and Thasos turned up in the river. Cato praised it as large, beautiful and full of fish, and irises grew on its banks.
