River

Fluvius Aunes

Listen to the story

Where Fluvius Aunes really ran is still disputed, although the map sets it firmly among the rivers of India. The Greek geographer Artemidorus, quoted by Strabo, called the Aunes a tributary of the Ganges. One reading places it on India's east coast as the Krishna. Another sees in the name a variant of the Cainas, the modern Kabul river, which feeds the Indus. The muddle may be ancient: this knowledge goes back to Alexander's campaign, and the historians of Alexander folded the tributaries of the Indus into the Ganges system. A list of places compiled in Ravenna names the river too.
