Fluvius Betuctelum

Lys

Listen to the story

Fluvius Betuctelum is usually identified with the Lys, a mountain stream that rises on Monte Rosa and joins the Dora Baltea at Pont-Saint-Martin, in Italy's Aosta Valley. The map draws it coming down from the Alps in tight little windings, crossing the road from Aosta to Ivrea beside the station of Vitricium, today's Verrès, and flowing on into the Po. That drawing is the catch: the Lys lies beyond Verrès, while the painted river passes on the other side. Some scholars therefore prefer the Evançon, which meets the Dora just before Verrès and is still crossed by a bridge of Roman date.
