River

Fluvius Brintesia

(upper course of Brenta) (Barrington)

Listen to the story

The Tabula draws Fluvius Brintesia as the northernmost arm of the Po delta, with its name set out in the sea, although the river actually rises in the mountains and reaches the Adriatic on its own. It is the Brenta in the Veneto, which classical writers still called the Meduacus. The newer name only spread at the end of antiquity, known from the poet Venantius Fortunatus and a list of places compiled in Ravenna, so the entry on the map is late Roman. In antiquity the river seems to have flowed close to the walls of Padua. In the sixteenth century the Venetians diverted it to keep silt out of their lagoon.
