River

Fluvius Cumara

Tavo

Listen to the story

Out on the Adriatic, not beside its own course, the map writes the name of the Fluvius Cumara, a river flowing down from a nameless mountain between the stations of Pinna and Salinas. The name probably ended up on the sea simply because the crowded land offered no room for it. Older research took the river for the Vomano, but that river lies too far south, and it is now identified with the Tavo in Italy. This is remarkable, because no other ancient source preserves a name for the Tavo at all.
