River

Fluvius Garunna

Garonne

Listen to the story

The Garonne, flowing from the Pyrenees past Toulouse and Bordeaux into the Atlantic, is the river the map names Fluvius Garunna. Julius Caesar made it the boundary between the Aquitani and the Celts, and the Greek geographer Strabo called its wide estuary a sea-lake. On the Tabula the name stands only once, at the river's source, with no trace of it near the mouth. The drawn course is badly muddled: at first the line stands in for tributaries of the Loire, the Allier, Indre and Vienne, and further on for the Charente.
