River

Fluvius Iala

Torrente Banna? [1]

Listen to the story

A river springs from a mountain range and runs down to the Po, and beside its source the map writes Fluvius Iala in large letters. It is probably the Torrente Banna, a modest stream that joins the Po south of Turin. The drawing is muddled: because the Po is drawn wrongly here, this right-bank tributary ends up crossing the road from Susa to Turin. The name appears in no other source. Scholars have linked it with the Iactus, a tributary of the Po named by the Roman writer Pliny, yet Pliny calls his rivers celebrated, which hardly suits so small a stream.
