Fluvius Labonia

Torrente Lavanestro · Torrente Lerone [6]]

Listen to the story

No other ancient source mentions the Fluvius Labonia, a small coastal river in Liguria between Genoa and Vado Ligure, whose name is thought to be pre-Roman. The map draws it winding down from a nameless mountain range, crossing the road to Acqui Terme and then the coastal road at the station Ad Navalia, “the dockyards”, before it reaches the sea. Its source is misplaced, because the Apennines are drawn too far north. Which stream it was is disputed; later research leans towards the Torrente Lerone near Cogoleto, reading the name as a copyist’s corruption of Laronia.
