Listen to the story
A short, winding river runs down from a mountain range on the map, crosses the road from Segusio, modern Susa, towards Ad Fines and ends in the Po. This is the Latis, a river known from no other ancient source, its name placed right at the spring. Scholars disagree on which river is meant. One view sees the Chisone, a tributary near Susa, and assumes the map has put it in the wrong place. The other, usually preferred, sees the Maira, which rises in the Cottian Alps. Roman finds have come to light along it, and the Roman town of Forum Germanorum lay nearby, although the Maira does not quite match the drawing either.
