River
Fluvius Lucus
Arroscia [2] · Impero [1 · 3]
Listen to the story
Reaching the Ligurian Sea at Oneglia, near Imperia in Italy, the Torrente Impero is probably the river the Tabula calls Fluvius Lucus, a name found in no other ancient source. Lucus is Latin for a sacred grove. The map lets the river rise in a nameless mountain range and wind down almost straight to the coast, crossing the road between Albingaunum and Vada Sabatia. That position would fit the Arroscia at Albenga better, and scholars disagree sharply. Yet the road station of Lucus Bormani, the grove of the Celtic god Bormanus, lay near the mouth of the Impero, and the river may well have taken its name from it.
