River
Fluvius Miso
Fiume Misa
Listen to the story
Fluvius Miso is the river Misa, which rises in the Apennines and reaches the Adriatic at Senigallia, the Roman Sena Gallica. The name Miso survives nowhere but on the Tabula, and that poses a puzzle, because ancient poets called the river of Senigallia the Sena. Some scholars therefore gave that older name to a neighbouring stream or to the Misa's tributary. The more convincing view holds that both names belong to one river: Sena from the days when the Celtic Senones were still remembered, Miso from a later time. The copyist set the name at the river mouth, though there was room by the source, and did the same for the next four rivers.
