River
Fluvius Ivaro
Salzach
Listen to the story
Few rivers have changed their names as often as the one the map calls Fluvius Ivaro, the Salzach in Austria and Bavaria. Around 700 the Life of Saint Rupert still spoke of a place beside the river Ivarus, anciently called Iuvavum, the Roman town that became Salzburg. A later Salzburg charter uses yet another name, placing the town of Salzburch on the river Igonta, which is also called Salzaha, the salt river whose name survives today.
