Fluvius Fevos

Torrente Varàita? [1 · 2]

Listen to the story

Fluvius Fevos, a river known only from this map, is probably the Varaita, a torrent that comes down from the Cottian Alps south of Monviso and joins the Po. The map draws it rising in the mountains, crossing the road from Susa towards the Alpine pass of Montgenèvre, and winding briefly into the Po. That crossing has puzzled scholars, who have also suggested the Chisone or the Belbo. The likeliest explanation blames the map itself, which runs the Po on the wrong side of Turin and so pushes the road beneath it. Where the Varaita reaches the plain, at Piasco, the Romans kept a customs station on Gaul's frontier duty.
