River

Fluvius Flosis

Potenza

Listen to the story

A river winds down to the Adriatic coast here, labelled Fluvius Flosis, and it is usually identified with the Potenza in the Marche region of Italy. The label sits near the mouth, simply because there was no room for it beside the source. The river's ancient name seems to have been Flusor, and the life of a saint describes the shallow Flusor flowing past Septempeda, today San Severino. Its modern name comes from Potentia, a Roman colony founded at its mouth in 184 BC. Scholars still disagree, though: some place the river at the Chienti, or even at one of that river's tributaries.
