Listen to the story
Fluvius Chulcul is a river without a river: only its name stands on the map. The copyist of around 1200 seems to have begun drawing its course below a mountain range, then realised the water would have to flow over the mountains, and erased it. Two gaps in the range and a white streak inside the name remain, and he never tried again. Its mouth is cautiously placed on the coast of Tunisia between Tabarka and Bizerte, probably at the Oued bou Zenna. Older research linked it with the Muthul, which the Roman historian Sallust names as the border between Jugurtha and Adherbal, but that river rises far inland.
