Fluvius Bersula

Stura · Bormida (Miller)

Listen to the story

The Bormida in Piedmont, a southern tributary of the Po, is probably the river the Tabula calls Fluvius Bersula, though the Stura, the little Bardonezza and the Versa have all been proposed. No other ancient source names it. The map draws a short stream that rises in the Apennines, makes two small bends and runs into the Po, well away from the Roman road that followed the Bormida through Acqui to Tortona. That gap is usually put down to the map's distortion, which pushes the Apennines and the Po much too far north.
