River
Fluvius Aspia
Fiume Aspio
Listen to the story
Fluvius Aspia runs between Ancona and Numana on the Adriatic coast of Italy and is identified with the Fiume Aspio, a short stream that the map nonetheless draws with a large, pronounced bend. The name is known only from the Tabula. There the river reaches the sea on its own, whereas the Aspio now joins the Musone as its main tributary. Older research saw this as a problem for the identification, yet in antiquity the two rivers did reach the sea separately. The Musone's mouth began to shift towards the Aspio in the fifteenth century, and engineering works made the change permanent in the sixteenth.
