River

Fluvius Albinia

Fiume Albegna

Listen to the story

The Albegna in southern Tuscany, flowing from the slopes of Monte Amiata to the Tyrrhenian Sea, is the river the Tabula labels Fluvius Albinia, its name written in red. The map lets it spring from an isolated mountain chain and run in a short curve to the sea, crossing the Via Aurelia between a road station named after the river and the two towers of Cosa. That station probably marked a bridge or stood beside one. The river mouth served as a harbour in Roman times, perhaps into the fifth century AD, and a portrait statue of the emperor Gallienus found there suggests it still mattered in the late empire.
