Don
Listen to the story
A river on the map carries a whole sentence as its label: Flumen Tanais qui dividit Asiam et Europam, the river Tanais that divides Asia from Europe. It is the Don, which runs for nearly two thousand kilometres into Lake Maeotis, the Sea of Azov. The Greek historian Herodotus made it the boundary between Scythians and Sarmatians, and the Roman writer Pliny noted that the Scythians called it Silis. Sarmatian tribes lived along its lower course from the fourth century BC, and archaeologists know of about fifteen ancient settlements there.
