River

Fluvius Ambrum

Lambro

Listen to the story

The Lambro, which rises in the hills near Lake Como, runs through the Brianza and joins the Po beyond Milan, is the river the Tabula names Fluvius Lambrum. On the map its first letter has slipped away, but the road station Lambrum, drawn where the road crosses the stream and perhaps marking a bridge, keeps the full name, even though it stands wrongly on the far side of the Po. The river flows out of a lake that the Roman writer Pliny called Eupilis, today Lago di Pusiano. The late Roman writer Sidonius Apollinaris remembered the Lambro as weedy, thick with marsh plants.
