Nemetaco

Arras

Nemetaco is Nemetacum, today Arras in northern France, the chief town of the Atrebates, on a height above the Scarpe. It is probably the Nemetocenna where Caesar spent the winter of 51 to 50 BC. Founded under Augustus at a meeting of roads, it grew into a town of thirty hectares, until a great fire in the later second century ended its prosperity; in late antiquity it shrank behind new walls and housed Batavian settlers. On the map the copyist seems to have lost his way here, first drawing the road towards Tournai before turning it towards Cambrai.
