Netide
Palaiopolis · Kalyvia Elidos
Netide is Elis, at Palaiopolis near Kalyvia Elidos in Greece, the city that ran the Olympic Games. Formed from several villages after the Persian Wars, it counted its land as sacred ground where no weapons were allowed, and the Roman writer Pliny says the ivory shoulder of Pelops was shown there. Unlike its neighbour Olympia it has no symbol on the map, perhaps because it declined once the pagan cults were banned. The odd name arose from misread Greek letters: Elide turned into Netide, and the list of places compiled in Ravenna has Etide.
