Nigrinianis

Maluk Preslavets

Nigrinianis lay on the Danube west of Silistra, near today's Maluk Preslavets in north-eastern Bulgaria. In the Roman register of routes the same station is already called Candidiana: the older fort of Nigrinianis seems to have been destroyed in the middle of the third century, perhaps by the Carpi, and a new one built, probably under Diocletian, with tiles of the Eleventh Legion. A large hoard of coins from the years 238 to 275 was found there, and the late fortress held out until the Slavs took it in the sixth century.
