Neretum

Nardo

Listen to the story

Neretum, now Nardò in the Salento, was a town of the Sallentini, a people of the heel of Italy; the poet Ovid mentions it in passing, and its own inscriptions spell the name Neritum. On the map, several blotches of green paint seem to have dripped by accident onto its last syllable, a small reminder that every copy of the map was painted by hand. The next station, Aletium, lies ten Roman miles, about fifteen kilometres, further on.
