Nicopolistro
Nikiup
Nicopolistro is Nicopolis ad Istrum, the city of victory, at today's Nikiup on the northern foot of the Haemus. Founded in 102 to hold the Thracian hill tribes in check, it was a Greek city in Roman dress: Greeks, Roman veterans, settlers from Asia Minor and Thracians lived side by side, with a forum and portico, a theatre, temples, an aqueduct and a wall with round towers and four gates. It flourished under the Severans; Goths threatened it and Huns laid it waste. On the map a hundred and thirty miles lead on to Marcianopolis with no station between.
