Nemea
Herakleion
Nemea, near the village of Iraklion, today Archaia Nemea in Greece, was not really a town but a sacred grove with a temple of Zeus, in a valley where the famous Nemean Games were held and where, in the woods, Heracles was said to have killed the lion. The temple, rebuilt between 330 and 320 BC, still has three columns standing. Pausanias found it roofless and without its statue, and later scholars no longer knew where Nemea lay at all, some even placing it in Thessaly. On the map the name is scuffed and its last letter lost.
