Lepanto · Navpaktos · Nafpaktos · Ναύπακτος

Listen to the story

Naupactos, later Lepanto and today Nafpaktos in Greece, guarded the narrows at the mouth of the Gulf of Corinth. Its name means shipyard: the Greek historian Ephorus said the Heraclidae built their fleet here, or the Locrians even earlier. In the Peloponnesian War it was Athens' naval base for raids on the Peloponnese, and later the chief harbour of the Aetolian League, which a Roman army besieged. Yet the map gives this great port no symbol and sets its station mark carelessly away from the shore.
