Mountain

mountain, no. 56

? Erymanthos

Listen to the story

The mountains drawn here in the Peloponnese are probably Mount Erymanthus, famous from the story of Heracles, who caught its wild boar, and already named by Homer. Its river joins the Alpheios, which the map, by a copyist's slip, labels Burotas, a garbled Eurotas. Another candidate is the Panachaikon above Patras, whose name stands right beside the mountain symbol, but that mountain is known only from the travel writer Pausanias.
