Listen to the story

Nauporto is Nauportus, today Vrhnika in Slovenia, where the Alpine road from Aquileia, already known to the Greek geographer Strabo, came down towards Emona. In AD 14, at the death of Augustus, soldiers had been sent to Nauportus to build this road and its bridges when the mutiny of the Pannonian legions broke out, as the Roman historian Tacitus tells. The Roman writer Pliny explains the name with the legend of the Argonauts, but it was probably an older native name. On the map Nauportus marks the border towards Pannonia.
