Road station
Natiolum
Giovinazzo
Listen to the story
Natiolum was a station on the Apulian coast road between Sipontum and Bari, usually placed at Giovinazzo, though Bisceglie and Molfetta have been suggested too. The medieval geographer Guido of Pisa claims the town's later name, Iuvenatium, came from Jovis navigatio, the voyage of Jupiter, a charming but fanciful derivation. The list of places compiled in Ravenna gives the name once correctly and once as Napiolum.
