Nares Lucanas

Scorzo [Pleiades] · bei Postiglione [3]

Listen to the story

Nares Lucanas, the Lucanian nostrils, was the name for the narrow mountain pass by which travellers left Campania and entered Lucania, near Postiglione above the plain of the Sele. Cicero passed this way on his road into exile and dated a letter to his friend Atticus at the Nares, and the historian Sallust mentions the place too. Later only the list of places compiled in Ravenna still records the name.
