Arpos

(near Arpinova) (Barrington) · (Arpe bei Foggia) (Miller)

Listen to the story

Arpos is Arpi, near Foggia in the wide grain plain of Apulia. Legend said the Greek hero Diomedes founded it and named it Argos Hippium, horse-rich Argos, after his home, a name that wore down to Argyrippa and finally Arpi. It was a large and wealthy trading town that struck its own coins, but after Cannae it went over to Hannibal, was retaken by Fabius Maximus in 213 BC, and never recovered.
