Aricia
Ariccia
Listen to the story
Aricia, now Ariccia, stood at the sixteenth milestone of the Via Appia below the Alban Hills, one of the oldest towns of Latium. In its sacred grove by Lake Nemi, called Diana's mirror, lay the famous sanctuary of Diana, which Cato the Elder says a dictator from Tusculum dedicated for the Latin towns together; its priest held office until a runaway slave killed him and took his place. A great Roman viaduct once carried the road across the valley here.
