Rottweil
Aris Flavis is Arae Flaviae, the Flavian Altars, today Rottweil on the Neckar in Germany. The general Pinarius Clemens founded it in 73 or 74 at a road junction, as the centre, with a cult of the emperors, for the newly won land between the Rhine and the Danube. Five forts are known here, and by 186 the civilian town had become a flourishing municipium; Rottweil's famous Orpheus mosaic comes from here. The map's fourteen leagues on to Rottenburg seem too few: either the figure should be eighteen, or a station on the Neckar has dropped out.
