Listen to the story

Svevia, the land of the Suebi, marks a great Germanic confederation of tribes, a name that still echoes in Swabia. Unusually for a people, it is written in black, running across the land beyond the Rhine from Mainz to past Strasbourg, beside Alamannia and near the Bructeri. Perhaps the Neckar Suebi are meant, who lived under Roman rule in the first and second centuries AD. The map sets them far apart from the Cherusci, just as the Roman historian Tacitus contrasted the Suebi with all other Germans, and only he called their territory Suebia.
