Tanasis Galatie

Listen to the story

Tanasis Galatie is written across the land east of the Sea of Azov, and its first word is usually connected with Tanais, the ancient name of the river Don. The Greek historian Herodotus saw this river as the border between Scythians and Sarmatians. At its mouth stood a city of the same name, founded by Bosporan Greeks in the third century BC, where Greek, Sarmatian and Maeotian merchants traded side by side. Later rebuilt with strong walls as a Roman military base, it fell to Goths and Heruli around AD 250.
