Syria Phoenix

Listen to the story

Syria Phoenix is the Roman province of Phoenicia, the old land of the Phoenician cities along the coast of what is now Lebanon. Its name belongs to a whole set of late Roman provinces grouped in the Diocese of the East. Eight of the nine are named on the map, among them Cilicia, Cyprus, Palestine, Arabia and Mesopotamia, and only Commagene is missing. The lettering had to squeeze in among the roads: the H is overrun by a route line, and the P and the O just touch others. Some older copies even cut the name short to Syrri.
