Umbranicia

Listen to the story

Umbranicia marks the land of the Umbranici, a Gallic people whom, apart from the Tabula, only the Roman writer Pliny mentions. Their home is disputed. Older research, misled by a faulty reading of Pliny, placed them near Toulouse or around Albi; later research favours the left bank of the Rhône, roughly between Avignon and Valence, in the Roman province of Gallia Narbonensis. A changing station called Umbenno on a pilgrim's route from Bordeaux lends some support, while the name's position on the map itself is considered unreliable.
