Thracia
Listen to the story
Thracia, the Roman province set up in AD 45 between the Aegean and the Black Sea, lands now shared by Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey, is lettered unusually large, stretching as far as Constantinople. It is also the only province name on the whole map. One letter even crowds a nearby station, whose name is split in two to make room for it. Scholars disagree about what the label covers: the late Roman diocese of Thrace, or the old undivided province that was later divided into three, with capitals at Philippopolis, Adrianople and Heraclea.
