Solitudines Sarmatarum
Listen to the story
Solitudines Sarmatarum means 'the wildernesses of the Sarmatians', the steppe peoples of the lands the map files under Scythia. The entry probably goes back to the early imperial period. It is most likely the same tract that the Roman writer Pliny, drawing on Agrippa, calls the deserts of Sarmatia, lying east of the Vistula. The map gives it a counterpart further south-east, Sors desertus, which matches what the Greek geographer Strabo called the Getic wasteland between the Danube and the Tyras.
