Gaetuli

Provincia Gaetulia

Listen to the story

Gaetuli was the name the Romans gave to a whole cluster of Berber tribes living south of Mauretania and Numidia, between the Lesser Syrtis and the Atlantic. On the map the name stretches unusually far across North Africa, probably to show that this was not one people but many. It also sits right inside the road network: the lines cut through its G and its T, yet seem to bend around its A, so it is unclear which was drawn first. Gaetulian soldiers served in Hannibal's army, and in 46 BC they fought on both sides of the Roman civil war in Africa.
