Casaroduno

Tours

Casarodvno is Caesarodunum, today Tours on the Loire, yet on the map this great city has no symbol and even stands well away from the river. It was the chief town of the Turoni and a thriving trading place, where roads met from Nantes, Bordeaux, Orléans and the north. Its amphitheatre, built under Hadrian, was one of the largest in the Roman world. After Germanic raiders destroyed the town in 275 it was rebuilt smaller behind walls; from 374 it was a provincial capital, and in 371 Saint Martin became its bishop.
