Fl. Nasabath

Oued bou Sellam · Oued Summam (Barrington) · Sahel (Miller)

Listen to the story

The river Nasabath reaches the sea east of Saldae in Mauretania Caesariensis and is identified with the Oued Soummam in Algeria. The map draws its course flowing from a mountain range but leaves it unnamed. The name comes from the geographer Ptolemy, who places its mouth between Saldae and Choba and, by mistake, lists the same river a second time as Audus, after a nearby cape. A faint trace of lettering may survive near the mouth. Stranger still is a line running from the other end of the mountains towards the sea. The copyist seems to have begun it and then tried to erase it, perhaps a second river, perhaps a slip.
