River

Fl. N.N.

Listen to the story

This small Flumen, a river the map leaves without a name, runs from an equally nameless mountain, the same range that feeds the river Pastius, down to the Ionian Sea at Hydruntum, today's Otranto in southern Italy. The river probably once carried the town's Greek name, Hydrus. Its modern name, the Idro, seems to preserve that ancient form better than the town itself, whose name has worn down over the centuries into Otranto.
