Samulocenis

Rottenburg a. N.

Listen to the story

Samulocenis is Rottenburg on the Neckar in Germany, a Celtic settlement that the Romans took over probably soon after AD 90. For a time it was the centre of an imperial estate run by a procurator, and, remarkably, a Greek inscription naming this official's post turned up far away in Bithynia, in Asia Minor. Later the town became the chief place of a self-governing district, though never a colony. Its walls, about five metres high with a walkway, enclosed more ground than the modern town, and baths, an aqueduct and a sacred precinct with temples and a column for Jupiter have been found. Alamannic raids in the third century brought destruction.
