Scunis

Listen to the story

Scupi, the Roman forerunner of Skopje in North Macedonia, is marked with the usual pair of towers, but its name came out as Scunis, probably because a copyist mistook a Greek pi for an n. The town was a Roman colony and later the capital of the province of Dardania, and the historian Procopius places the birthplace of the emperor Justinian nearby. The road on to Stobi is a puzzle: the map's figures add up to a hundred and fifteen Roman miles, more than twice the real distance. Scholars suspect that two separate routes were accidentally woven into one.
